PRESS RELEASE - NOVEMBER 12, 2003
The Lindenwold Police Department would like to make citizens of Lindenwold aware of a growing problem occurring on our roadways and public areas. Recently the use of motorized skateboards and motorized scooters has become prevalent throughout the region and the state. The use of these vehicles is illegal on the roads, sidewalks and public areas of the State of New Jersey. According to Title 39 of the New Jersey State statutes, which governs motor vehicles and traffic regulation, every motor vehicle and motorcycle driven on public roadways must be registered (NJSA 39:3-4). the law defines a motor vehicle as "all vehicles propelled otherwise than by muscular power..." and a motorcycle as "motorcycles, motor bikes, bicycles with motor attached and all motor-operated vehicles of the bicycle or tricycle type...whether the motor power be part thereof or attached thereto and having a saddle or seat with driver sitting astride or upon it or a platform on which the driver stands" (NJSA 39:1-1). Since motorized scooters and motorized skateboards fit within these definitions and are obviously not equipped with the necessary safety equipment to be legally registered, they may not be operated on the streets, sidewalks or public areas within the Borough of Lindenwold.
Since most of these vehicles are operated by juveniles we would ask that all parents or guardians of children who have access to these vehicles exert due diligence in instructing them on the proper, safe and legal use of the vehicles. Continued operation of these vehicles on the roadways, sidewalks and public property of the state or borough could result in the operator being cited for operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and the impoundment of the vehicle.
We hope this information will benefit everyone. Through cooperation of all in the community this dangerous and illegal activity should be eliminated.
